TREATMENT OF BATIK WASTEWATER USING ADVANCED OXIDATION PROCESSES METHOD WITH FENTON REAGENT (H2O2/FE2+) TO REDUCE THE CONCENTRATION OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS AND COLOR

Batik Industries commonly using synthetic dyes for the dying process. This will produce wastewater that has high concentration of organic compounds and colour. Batik wastewater sampled from batik industry in Bandung City had COD level of 1,000 mg/L, colour of 975 Pt-Co and pH of 2,2 up to 7,86. Thes...

These parameters had exceeded the quality standard regulated by the Ministry of Environmental and Forestry number P.16 2019. Batik wastewater have to be treated, and fenton reagent is one of the methods being used to treat batik wastewater. This method is a kind of AOPs, where hydroxyl radicals (·OH) are produced from H2O2 compounds using Fe2+ as a catalyst. Hydroxyl radical can attack the organic compound of batik dye. Artificial wastewater from Procion MX Cobalt Blue dye and real batik wastewater were used in this research. The COD and colour concentration of artificial wastewater were 1,113.6 mg/L and 1,000 mg/L. The treatment was conducted by varying the concentration of H2O2, concentration of Fe2+, pH and temperature to determine the optimum condition of the treatment. Within 60 minutes, the artificial wastewater treated resulted in the degradation of COD and colour until the concentration remain were 139,87 mg/L and 90,2 mg/L each. This was obtained with the pH 3,5, the dose of fenton reagents were 125 mM of H2O2 and 4 mM of Fe2+ and treatment conducted in room temperature. With the same treatment, the batik wastewater was treated with initial concentration of COD is 1,008.6 mg/L and color absorbance is 0,594. Within 60 minutes of process, COD concentration and color absorbance reduced up to 80% and 97% respectively. Degradation of organic compounds and colour of artificial wastewater and batik wastewater was fit to the second-order kinetics reactions, with the rate constant of COD and colour degradation of artificial wastewater were 0,0002 and 0,0001 mM- minutes- respectively and batik wastewater were 0,00007 and 0,7567 mM- minutes- respectively. text
