IMPROVED PROPERTIES OF GUM ROSIN FOR ROAD MARKING PAINT BINDERS
Gum rosin is one of the non-timber forest products which derived from merkusii pine resin. Main component of gum resin comprises 80-90% of pine resin. Main component of gum resin comprises 80-90% of pine resin. Currently, application of gum rosin as a road marking paint are being developed. However, Gum rosin’s weakness as raw material for road marking paints are its characteristics of easily oxidated and not stable which makes low durability at high temperature and low resistance to abrasion. As a result, road marking paint derived from gum rosin is quickly fade, dark color, and not strong enough durability at high temperature. To improve gum rosin properties, modification process is through esterification reaction with glycerol and maleic anhydride fortification. This research aims to obtain procedure of maleic modified gum rosin blending process with varying weight rosin. Gum rosin road marking paint performance is tested by using various tests such as softening point test, hardness test, abrasion test, heat stability test, and visual observation. Maleic modified gum rosin road marking paint product will be compared with non-modified gum rosin road marking paint product and conventional paint product. Conclusion from the experiment, indicates that modification reaction can produce gum rosin more stable, and strongly resistant to oxidation. Blending process using 22%-wt maleic modified gum rosin, CaCO3 30%-wt, wax 2%-wt, talc 2%-wt, glass beads 30%-wt, and TiO2 10%-wt produce better paint product quality from softening point test, and abrasion test. Compared with non-modified gum rosin road marking paint product, the paint quality of maleic modified gum rosin is better with strongly resistant to oxidation, higher softening point, and abrasion resistant. The resulting road marking paint product has no cracks. text |
