Description
Summary:The utilization of microalgae as a source of astaxanthin, a natural antioxidant compound, has gained increasing popularity due to their advantages in producing consumable astaxanthin for human and accumulating big amount of esterified astaxanthin, which contributes to the not-easily-oxidized characteristic. Haematococcus pluvialis is a commercial microalga producing astaxanthin. However, it has some drawbacks, such as slow biomass growth rate, low cell density, and easily contaminated. Besides H. pluvialis, there are several microalgae, such as Chlorella zofingiensis, which has potential in producing astaxanthin. However, only a little research has been done on the astaxanthin production kinetic of C. zofingiensis. Hence, this study aims to do modeling and simulation to predict astaxanthin production kinetics from C. zofingiensis with an approach using kinetic models of biomass growth, substrate consumption, and product formation. In this study, model modification to take account of light intensity effect and initial substrate concentration variation to predict microalgae growth and astaxanthin production will be done. Modeling and simulation in this study are using secondary data, such as concentration of biomass, substrate, and astaxanthin which are obtained from another research paper. Simulation will be conducted using MATLAB R2021a software.
