Description
Summary:The degree or level of urbanization shown by the number of urban population shows an increasing trend on a global and national scale. A total of 65,65% of Indonesia’s urban population is concentrated on the island of Java which only has an area of 7% of the total land area of Indonesia. West Java is one of the provinces with the highest percentage of urban population in Java. Urban population growth goes hand in hand with urban physical growth. Urbanization brings a positive impact on economic growth. However, if it is not controlled and planned properly, urbanization brings negative impacts on economic, sosical, and environmental aspects. To be able to determine good urban area development policies and strategies, it is necessary to understand the spatial characteristics of urban areas from time to time. However, there is still few research in Indonesia on urban spatial patterns that has been carried out quantitatively using parameters that can be compared between regions and between periods, especially spatially. The spatial metrics method characterize urban spasial pattern as a parameter or statistical indices that can be compared between regions and time periods. This study aims to identify trends in urban growth and changes in urban spatial patterns in West Java. In this study descriptive methods with quantitative and spatial approaces were used with classification data of urban and rural localitites based on the results of the national population census. The stages in this research are to identify the trend of population growth using the population growth rate analysis method, to identifty urban spatial patterns using the overlay analysis method, and to analyze the changes in urban spatial patterns using the spatial metrics analysis method. The results can be concluded that the urban areas of West Java shows signs of mega-urbanization characterized by urban expansion beyond the core area which is reflected in the urban spatial pattern and the results of the calculation of spatial metrics. The use of urban and rural localities classification data is able to describe the urban spatial patterns formed and the spatial metrics method is able to detect changes in urban spatial characteristics.
