Description
Summary:This literature study was focused to the Kaempferia genus from Zingiberaceae family, specifically Kaempferia rotunda L., Kaempferia angustifolia Rosc., Kaempferia pandurata Roxb., and Kaempferia parviflora Wall. Ex. Baker species. The objection of this literature study was to provide comprehensive information regarding any of the plant's observations, furthermore to correlate the traditional usage and pharmacological activities. The journals were found on search engines such as Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect with the keywords from each of the species' names. There were several inclusion criteria used to screen the journals: journals published between 2010- 2022 (per March), national and international journals in English, SCOPUS indexed with the first until fourth quartile, and have DOI (Digital Object Identifier). These plants have several same features in the botany aspects: long rhizome shape with unique odor, fresh green oval-shaped pinnate leaf, and zygomorphic symmetry. Major chemical groups from these four plants are flavonoids, chalcones, and volatile oils, with Pinostrobin as their identity compound. They exhibit the same pharmacological activity: anti-tumor, but empirically used as gastrointestinal tract medication. A correlation was found between traditional usage and pharmacological activities for Kaempferia rotunda, Kaempferia pandurata, and Kaempferia parviflora plants. However, the correlation between both aspects hasn’t been found for Kaempferia angustifolia plant. Therefore, needs further observation and analysis regarding the correlation between traditional usage and pharmacological activities, especially for Kaempferia angustifolia. Also, a suggestion for further study needs to observe and ensure the effect of pharmacology activities or continued to clinical assay.
