Description
Summary:Payung Geulis is a traditional craft from Tasikmalaya, West Java, which is one of the typical icons of the area. This craft has existed for decades and has experienced its heyday. However, with the development of more modern and practical umbrella products, interest in the Payung Geulis craft began to wane. In the long term, it is feared that this drop could lead to the cessation of craftsmen’s regeneration, which could lead to the extinction of traditions. One of the efforts that can be done to maintain the traditional crafts is by providing novelty and upgrades, so that tradition can continue to be sustainable. Payung Geulis craft itself has the potential to be developed following the modern market without sacrificing traditional elements that have been built long ago. In this study, observations were done to Payung Geulis craftsmen in the Panyingkiran, Tasikmalaya, to find out the building elements of this craft directly. Based on the analysis of the Payung Geulis craft, there is an opportunity to diversify this craft product into a more modern one, which is lighting products. This product diversification step can be an opportunity for Payung Geulis crafts to reach a wider market, and this will also have a good impact on the welfare of the craftsmen and the preservation of traditions.
