Description
Summary:Genus Alpinia belongs to Zingiberaceae family and is widely distributed throughout Asia, mostly in Southeast Asia. Genus Alpinia is utilized as cooking ingredients, herbs and spices, decorative plants, and traditional medicine as well. This research’s main objective is to study the botany, chemical constituents, traditional usage, and pharmacological activity aspects of Alpinia conchigera (lesser alpinia), Alpinia galanga (greater galangal), Alpinia officinarum (lesser galangal), and Alpinia purpurata (red ginger). The research was done by collecting journals as the main literature trough search engines, such as Google Scholar and Science Direct. Journals used should be written in English, indexed by Scopus, published in 2010-2021, and have its DOI. All four plants are known to have similiraties regarding botanical aspect, all four plants are herbaceous plants with aromatic rhizomes, oblong or lanceolate shaped leaves, small sized flowers, and capsule shaped fruits. Regarding the chemical constituent aspect, all four plants contain chemicals belonging in the terpen, flavonoid, and phenolic group. Furthermore, the relationship between traditional usage and pharmacological activities were found. However, most of the pharmacological activities assay were done with in-vitro method, therefore further research in the pre-clinical (animal testing) and clinical stage are needed.
