Description
Summary:Until now, inorganic sunscreen agents have been limited to using TiO2 and ZnO in form of bulk and nanoparticles. However, it is known that TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles may cause negative health effects. CeO2 nanoparticles (nanoceria) was proposed as an alternative to physical sunscreen agent with lower catalytic properties and UV absorption activity. The synthesis of nanoceria with the addition of Ca and Zn dopant was carried out using the green synthesis method with the addition of ethanol extract of Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera) obtained from maceration. Phytochemical screening stated that the extract contained flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, phenolics, and steroids/triterpenoids. Characterization of nanoceria was carried out using XRD, TEM, FTIR, PSA, and UV-Vis spectrophotometry which showed that there was a change in crystal size and an increase in the energy band gap with the addition of dopant. VCO (virgin coconut oil) nanoemulsion was made by optimizing the oil content, PEG-40 HCO, and PEG-400 as surfactants and cosurfactants. Characterization and test series were conducted include transmittance, dilution resistance, centrifugation, and freeze-thaw cycle test. Finally, F3 was chosen as the best formula. The Rancimat test and the calculation of the SPF value stated that the addition of Ca and Zn dopant could decrease the catalytic activity of nanoceria and increase UV absorption. The SPF value also increased using VCO nanoemulsion compared to conventional emulsions. In this study, the SPF values of Ca-doped Ce and Zn-doped Ce in the nanoemulsion cream base were 18.62 and 17.17 (medium protection). Thus, nanoceria can be proposed as an alternative to physical sunscreen agents.
