Description
Summary:Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. One of the most common coronary heart diseases is myocardial infarction. Myocardial infarction is the death of heart tissue due to impaired blood supply. Myocardial infarction happens due to oxidative stress, which can be caused by the administration of Isoproterenol. Additional antioxidants are needed to overcome oxidative stress conditions. This study was conducted to determine the cardioprotective potential of green okra fruit and red okra fruit (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) ethanolic extracts in rat with isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction. Determination of cardioprotective potential assessed from cardiac enzyme activity (CK, CK-MB, ALT, AST, and LDH), calculation of infarct area (TTC staining), and microscopic evaluations of the cardiacs. Tests were carried out on 7 groups of male wistar rats, namely the negative control group which received 0.1% Na-CMC; positive control group that received 0.1% Na-CMC and induced by Isoproterenol 85 mg/kgBW; the test group that given ethanol extract of red okra fruit (EEBOM) 125 mg/kgBW and induced by Isoproterenol 85 mg/kgBW; the test group that given ethanol extract of red okra fruit (EEBOM) 250 mg/kgBW and induced by Isoproterenol 85 mg/kgBW; the test group that given ethanol extract of green okra fruit (EEBOH) 125 mg/kgBW and induced by Isoproterenol 85 mg/kgBW; the test group that given ethanol extract of green okra fruit (EEBOH) 250 mg/kgBW and induced by Isoproterenol 85 mg/kgBW; and the comparison group that given Atenolol 4.5 mg/kgBW and induced by Isoproterenol 85 mg/kgBW. Cardiac enzyme level was measured from cardiac blood serum and statistically analyzed with SPSS 25® version. The results showed that the ethanol extract of red okra fruit 250 mg/kgBW and ethanol extract of green okra fruit 250 mg/kgBW had the best potential in preventing heart damage in the incidence of myocardial infarction. Infarct area size and microscopic observation of rats' heart also showed the best cardioprotective potential possessed by ethanol extract of red okra fruit 250 mg/kgBW and ethanol extract of green okra fruit 250 mg/kgBW.
