Summary: | The Curcuma genus is one of the main genera that belongs to the Zingiberaceae family. Curcuma
zedoaria (Christm.) Rosc. (Temu Putih), Curcuma aeruginosa Roxb. (Temu Ireng), and Curcuma
heyneana Val. & Zijp (Temu Giring) are plants belonging to the Curcuma genus which has been used
traditionally. This research was conducted to study the botanical aspects, traditional uses, chemical
compounds, and pharmacological activity of Curcuma zedoaria, Curcuma aeruginosa, and Curcuma
heyneana through a literature study. The literature study was carried out using search engines such
as Scopus, Google Scholar, Science Direct, and PubMed. The literature used is an English-language
scientific journal published in 2010 –February 2022, indexed by Scopus, has DOI, and contains
information related to chemical compounds, and/or pharmacological activity, and/or traditional uses
of the three plants. The literature review results show that temu putih, temu ireng, and temu giring
contain chemical compounds such as monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, curcuminoids, and others.
In addition, the three plants were also reported to have pharmacological activities such as
antimicrobial, antioxidant, cytotoxic activity, and other activities. Some pharmacological activities
support the traditional uses of the three plants. This research is expected to be a comprehensive
information to support the development and use of Curcuma zedoaria, Curcuma aeruginosa, and
Curcuma heyneana as natural medicinal plants.
