HEPATOPROTECTIVE ACTIVITY OF COMBINATION OF TURMERIC (CURCUMA LONGA L.) AND CURCUMA (CURCUMA XANTHORRIZA ROXB.) WITH BLACK PEPPER FRUIT (PIPER NIGRI L.) IN WISTAR RATS

Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) and curcuma (Curcuma xanthorriza Roxb.) are traditional plants whose main content is curcuminoids which have hepatoprotective properties. Poor absorption of curcuminoids can be improved with piperine. This study aimed to assay hepatoprotective activity of the combinat...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/65770 Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) and curcuma (Curcuma xanthorriza Roxb.) are traditional plants whose main content is curcuminoids which have hepatoprotective properties. Poor absorption of curcuminoids can be improved with piperine. This study aimed to assay hepatoprotective activity of the combination of turmeric and curcuma rhizome with black pepper fruit in capsule form, each consisting of turmeric/black pepper (760mg/40mg) and temulawak/black pepper (1520mg/40mg). Hepatoprotective activity was assay in male Wistar rats induced by liver damage with TB drugs (isoniazid and rifampicin). The two combined doses assayed were equivalent to 2 (KLH1, TLH1) and 3 capsules (KLH2, TLH2) for each of the test simplicia combinations. The results showed that turmeric and its combination (KLH1 and KLH2) prevented liver damage significantly (p<0.01) faster starting on day 14 than curcuma and its combination (TLH1 and TLH2) which started to prevent liver damage on day 21 administrations as seen from GPT activity. In the curative test, KLH2 treated liver damage faster than turmeric and KLH1 and curcuma and their combination. However, judging from the levels of albumin, turmeric or their combination and temulawak or their combination can repair liver damage from the 7th day of presentation. In general, the combination has more potential to prevent and treat liver damage than without combination. text
