Summary: | Carbon neutral is a net-zero state of carbon dioxide, part of net zero emissions that can be
achieved by balancing the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions produced with those emitted
from the atmosphere. Indonesia is committed to reduce GHG emissions by 29% (834 million
tons of CO2e), with its own efforts (unconditional), or 41%, (1.185 million tons of CO2e) with
international assistance (conditional), for all sectors in 2030, when compared to the Business
as Usual (BaU) scenario. This is done as a part of Indonesia's efforts towards carbon neutral
state as conveyed by Indonesiasn government through the document of Long-term Strategy on
Low Carbon and Climate Resilience 2050 (LTS-LCCR 2050). Based on the comparison
between the calculated study and the NDC report, coal-fired power plant emissions account
for about 15% of the total GHG emissions in Indonesia. Through the implementation of
actions in accordance with RUPTL 2021-2030 electricity production scenario, including the
development of new and renewable energy (NRE) and reduction the share of fossil
generators; fuel diversion; utilization of biomass-based fuels; as well as the use of low
carbon and more efficient technology, the optimal and low carbon scenario is still not meet
the NDC requirements, whereas the coal-fired power plant GHG emissions need to be
reduced by 125,1-177,5 tons of CO2e. The energy sector in the future has an important role,
whereas the sector is predicted to be the largest contributor to GHG emissions in 2026.
However, Indonesia still needs to plan a more comprehensive strategy for all sectors to be
able to achieve carbon neutral state. |
