Bamboo is one of non-timber forestry product with largest quantity production in Indonesia. It’s short growing period promote it’s abundance, therefore bamboo becomes one of the most promising high durability wood substitute material. Concerning demand for timber forestry products that has been increasing year by year but got hindered by timber availability itself. Betung bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper) is one of bamboo species growing in Indonesia, this species have excellent mechanic characteristics. However, like any other lignocellulosic materials bamboo needs to be preserved in order to protects it from degrading. Nowadays, industrial development trend shifts to be more environmentally friendly. In this paper bamboo is preserved by hot soaking method in 70-80? for 3 hours. Mimba (Azadirachta indica) leafs, tobacco leafs (Nicotiana sp.), and turmeric (Curcuma longa) used as preservative with 10%;15% and 20%(w/w) solved in water. Result of the preservation will be compared with samples preserved using borax:boric acid (1:2) at a concentration of 10%. Analysis of the effectiveness of preservatives assessed by the inhibition of the material on the growth of fungi. Fungi used for the experiment obtained from infected air dryed-bamboo. Result of the analysis shows that the best inhibition obtained from the treatment of 20% turmeric for 66.21%, turmeric 15% for 64.21% and tobacco 20% for 57.37%. The inhibition of turmeric will be reduced by half after 48 hours, while the inhibition of tobacco leaves will decrease drastically.
