Description
Summary:Solid compounds can form polymorphs or combination compounds in the form of hydrates, solvates, salts, or neutral compounds. Different forms of solid compounds can affect their physicochemical properties. This study aims to determine the effect of water-methanol solvent composition in forming hydrates on the solid structure of favipiravir. Hydrates or solvates are conditions when water or solvent molecules combine in a solid structure. In this study, the starting material favipiravir was recrystallized with water, methanol, and water-methanol (1:1). Characterization was carried out using semimanual electrothermal, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Powder X-Ray Diffraction (PXRD). Based on the analysis, the formation of hydrates was indicated by the occurrence of dehydration in the analysis using semimanual electrothermal and DSC, a shift in wavenumber of characteristic peaks in the FTIR spectrum, and the appearance of new peaks in the PXRD diffractogram. The results of the analysis showed two different unstable forms of hydrate in water and water-methanol (1:1). Thus, it can be concluded that favipiravir can bind to water molecules to form unstable hydrate compounds.
