Non-domestic usage of water includes the agriculture industry, of which water consumption rate is estimated to average at 70%. The increase in human population further increases the need to convert the agriculture-adjacent land into residential and industrial zones. This land conversion, including the irrigation channels, is considered to not only affect water usage in terms of quantity parameters of flow rate, elevation, and depth, but also its quality. The study regarding land conversion and its effects on irrigation water quality is rarely done, and will be the main focus of this research. This research is conducted in Soreang and Katapang Districts located in Bandung Regency. The two areas are rapidly developing zones and are also part of the designed infrastructure development zone of Soreang Integrated and Sustainable City (KSTB). This research is conducted through field observation, water sampling, and water quality analysis from 31 points located in 4 irrigation zones (IZ), which are Cibeureum IZ, Kiaraeunyeuh IZ, Leuwikuray IZ, and Juntihilir IZ. The results of the analysis is then compared to Class II water guidelines imposed by The 2021 Government Regulation No. 22 and The 2014 Water Resources R&D Department Irrigation Water Quality Criteria. Through pollution indices, each parameter on each sampling point is quantified to analyse its waterquality status. After the results are analysed, the water quality of each IZ is shown to be moderately to heavily polluted. Water quality parameters of temperature, electric conductivity, TDS, BOD, COD, SAR, Na, DO, RSC, Ammonia, Sulfate, Boron, Oil and Grease, MBAS, Chloride, and coliforms have exceeded the guidelines. This result is in accordance with the field observation, in which the irrigation channel is observed to be a disposal site for domestic, industrial, and livestock wastes surrounding the water body. The irrigation channel wall is also observed to be physically damaged, which is a possible factor that could introduce pollutants into the channel. With this poor quality of irrigation water source, evaluation and handling needs to be done to maintain agricultural productivity and public health, including the farmers and the consumers. text |
