Summary: | Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is one of the leading fishery commodities in Indonesia. In fish farming, feed contributes as much as 60-70% of the total production cost. The high cost of feed can be caused due to competition in the use of food raw materials for humans and livestock, such as fish meals. One of the insects that have the potential to be used as fish food is the Hermetia illucens (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) or Black Soldier Fly (BSF). BSF larvae can convert organic waste such as coconut dregs into body biomass and contain high protein.
This research was conducted in Bukit Sandy, Bandung and ITB Jatinangor Campus to assess the proximate content of BSF larvae cultured with coconut dregs feed and assess the best feed composition on the proximate content of black tilapia. The treatment used was fish meal substitution by BSF larvae meal as much as 0% (A), 25% (B), and 50% (C). The test feed was given to tilapia seedlings aged about 70 days with a feed protein content is 30%. Observations were made for 30 days with the frequency of feeding three times a day, 3% fish weight/day.
The results showed that 19-day-old BSF larvae cultured with coconut dregs had a protein content of 44.24%, carbohydrates 23.36%, fat 24.14%, crude fiber 0.80%, and gross energy of 4,835 Kcal/kg. The best feed composition for black tilapia was the substitution of 50% fish meal by BSF larvae meal (treatment C) in terms of the highest protein content in black tilapia at 16.14%, although it had a low carbohydrate content (60.44%) and fat. which is high (4.65%). Based on this research, it can be concluded that BSF larvae meal can replace fish meal by 50%.
