EKSPLORATION OF RUST DYEING TECHNIQUES AS A WAY OF DYEING YARN FOR STRIATED WOVEN FABRIC
Dip-dyeing technique for textile material is categorized by either synthetic dip-dye and natural dip-dye. Dip-dyeing with natural dye needs to be repeatedly done to produce a strong finish, whilst the dye absorption is limited by the saturation of the fibers of the dipped fabric. Rustdyeing is a t...

Rustdyeing is a technique that can be used as a natural dip-dye by using electrochemically corroded metal. Electrochemical corrosion is a process initiated by the spontaneous process of reduction-oxidation, otherwise known as redox, that occurred when a metal interacts with either air and moisture to form a discoloration and degradation of material at the surface of said metal. This discolored and degraded form of metal could be used as a eco-friendly and skin-safe dye. The traditional striated woven fabric were usually used for daur kehidupan ceremonies while the contemporary fabrics are used as clothings, household upholstery, tablecloths, and accessories in the effort to conserve traditional Javanese culture. This research serves the purpose to explore rust as a dye paired with natural mordants and fixatives to produce colours ranging from brown, black, gray to yellow. The process of rustdyeing is safe as long as it is used for textile products. text |

Dip-dyeing technique for textile material is categorized by either synthetic dip-dye and natural
dip-dye. Dip-dyeing with natural dye needs to be repeatedly done to produce a strong finish,
whilst the dye absorption is limited by the saturation of the fibers of the dipped fabric. Rustdyeing is a technique that can be used as a natural dip-dye by using electrochemically corroded
metal. Electrochemical corrosion is a process initiated by the spontaneous process of
reduction-oxidation, otherwise known as redox, that occurred when a metal interacts with
either air and moisture to form a discoloration and degradation of material at the surface of
said metal. This discolored and degraded form of metal could be used as a eco-friendly and
skin-safe dye.
The rust-dyeing technique is applied to the yarn by tieing the yarn to produce the desired colour
pattern where it will be woven to form the striated woven fabric which originated from Central
Java. The traditional striated woven fabric were usually used for daur kehidupan ceremonies
while the contemporary fabrics are used as clothings, household upholstery, tablecloths, and
accessories in the effort to conserve traditional Javanese culture.
This research serves the purpose to explore rust as a dye paired with natural mordants and
fixatives to produce colours ranging from brown, black, gray to yellow. The process of rustdyeing is safe as long as it is used for textile products. |
