The dual gradient drilling concepts have been introduced to overcome the challenges and problems related to deepwater drilling by providing simpler, safer, and more economic well design and therefore enhancing the exploration and exploitation processes of deepwater oil and gas resources (Marbun & Kurnia, 2012). In order to achieving dual gradient drilling operation, the wellbore is drilled with two different fluid gradients in the annulus (Rehm, et al., 2008; Marbun & Kurnia, 2012). By having two different pressure gradients, a favorable pressure profile is designed to be closer to the pressure profile that naturally exists in the subsurface formation (Marbun & Kurnia, 2012). This cause the utilization of dual gradient drilling will result in reduction of required casing strings, non-productive time, and also will enhance well control (Rehm, et al., 2008; Marbun & Kurnia, 2012). Although the use of dual gradient method provides a system that creates pressure profile that resembles to what naturally exists in the subsurface formation, the pressure distribution along the wellbore annulus is also affected by the changes of pressure and temperature alonng the wellbore depth, as the changes of these parameters will affect mud density (Marbun & Kurnia, 2012). The study and research of the effects of pressure and temperature variation on mud density is therefore necessary to understand the distribution of mud density over the well depth and to ensure that the dual gradient drilling operation can be implemented safely (Marbun & Kurnia, 2012). This study attempts to simplify the calculation process of the effect of pressure and temperature variation on imud density which has been proposed and published by Kutasov (Kutasov, 1999) and Marbun & Kurnia (Marbun & Kurnia, 2012). A software application has been created and developed in order to solve complex calculations and to obtain accurate computation results for determination of mud density being used in dual gradient drilling operation. This software calculates the density of drilling mud based on proposed equation from previous studies and displays the pressure distribution due to differences in drilling mud density along the wellbore depth during drilling operation. In addition, this software also visualizes the effect of each parameter (pressure and temperature) on mud density being used. text |

The petroleum industry is requiring novel drilling concepts that make exploration of deepwater resources
become economically feasible. The dual gradient drilling concepts have been introduced to overcome the
challenges and problems related to deepwater drilling by providing simpler, safer, and more economic well
design and therefore enhancing the exploration and exploitation processes of deepwater oil and gas resources
(Marbun & Kurnia, 2012).
In order to achieving dual gradient drilling operation, the wellbore is drilled with two different fluid gradients
in the annulus (Rehm, et al., 2008; Marbun & Kurnia, 2012). By having two different pressure gradients, a
favorable pressure profile is designed to be closer to the pressure profile that naturally exists in the subsurface
formation (Marbun & Kurnia, 2012). This cause the utilization of dual gradient drilling will result in reduction
of required casing strings, non-productive time, and also will enhance well control (Rehm, et al., 2008; Marbun
& Kurnia, 2012).
Although the use of dual gradient method provides a system that creates pressure profile that resembles to what
naturally exists in the subsurface formation, the pressure distribution along the wellbore annulus is also
affected by the changes of pressure and temperature alonng the wellbore depth, as the changes of these
parameters will affect mud density (Marbun & Kurnia, 2012). The study and research of the effects of pressure
and temperature variation on mud density is therefore necessary to understand the distribution of mud density
over the well depth and to ensure that the dual gradient drilling operation can be implemented safely (Marbun
& Kurnia, 2012).
This study attempts to simplify the calculation process of the effect of pressure and temperature variation on
imud density which has been proposed and published by Kutasov (Kutasov, 1999) and Marbun & Kurnia
(Marbun & Kurnia, 2012). A software application has been created and developed in order to solve complex
calculations and to obtain accurate computation results for determination of mud density being used in dual
gradient drilling operation. This software calculates the density of drilling mud based on proposed equation
from previous studies and displays the pressure distribution due to differences in drilling mud density along the
wellbore depth during drilling operation. In addition, this software also visualizes the effect of each parameter
(pressure and temperature) on mud density being used. |
