Description
Summary:About 50% of banana production in Asia itself comes from Indonesia. Therefore Indonesia is one of the banana producers with the 3rd rank in the world.Banana production centers in Indonesia are Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, Bali and NTB. There are several types of bananas scattered in Indonesia, one of which is the Abaka banana. The abaka banana tree is a male type of banana that grows in the Sangihe Talaud area. Abaca banana fiber is the main ingredient in manufacturing a typical Sangihe Talaud cloth called "Kofo" cloth. "Kofo" fabric has the characteristics of being hard and stiff. This fabric has an essential meaning in its ornaments and colors. Currently, the development of "Kofo" cloth is decreasing. Many indigenous people no longer produce the cloth. It can be considered extinct because only a few original "Kofo" cloth is left in the Sangihe area, Talaud. This research was conducted to preserve the "Kofo" fabric to bring back the "Kofo" weaving culture with several developments carried out, starting from ornaments and materials to finished products in the form of home decor. Several developments were carried out to improve the quality of the "Kofo" fabric as an effort to increase the potential wealth of textile handicrafts in the Sangihe area, Talaud. This study uses a qualitative approach. The data collected is primary data in the form of interviews, literature studies, field observations, and visual exploration of the "Kofo" fabric ornament, as well as exploration of selected weaving designs. The output of this research is home decor with ornaments resulting from the development of Sangihe "Kofo" fabric ornaments, with the primary material of abaca banana fiber using supplementary weft weaving and kepper weaving techniques
