5G is the next generation of cellular systems that will come in the next few years.
The ever-increasing network traffic causes the need to switch cellular systems from
4G and LTE to 5G. 5G technology offers higher data transfer rates, lower latency,
and better energy efficiency compared to 4G. The modulation process is one of the
important aspects of improving performance of physical layer cellular network. In
4G and LTE technology, OFDM multicarrier system is used in the modulation
process. This multicarrier system has been implemented for the first time on 4G
cellular technology, where previously cellular technology only used single-carrier
modulation for modulation process. The change from single-carrier to multicarrier
modulation improves performance, especially in controlling ISI and increasing
data transfer speed.
For multicarrier systems on 5G technology, there are several other alternatives
besides OFDM to choose from. Among them are GFDM, FBMC, and UFMC.
GFDM is an alternative that has potential to be developed because GFDM can
produce a multicarrier modulation system that has a lower PAPR, is more flexible,
and can reduce out-of-band radiation. In this study, the authors have succeeded in
designing and implementing a prototype transmitter of a GFDM multicarrier
system for educational and research purposes. This system is designed using
MATLAB and implemented on SDR USRP E310. In addition, further research was
also carried out on the comparison between OFDM and GFDM multicarrier
systems from the system that the author implemented.
