Summary: | Hana Company operations has 2 big operations, Heavy Oil and Light Oil Operations. This division is based on the type of oil produced and Area of Production. The Area of heavy oil production is on Dana Steam Flood with 13 area. Work Over and Well Service are the activities in the technical operation of an oil well and required initial killing well process. In 2019 and 2020, the number of routine services suspended job due to killing problem in Dana Field are increasing quite significant. Most of them in area 1 and 2. Those wells were unable to keep dead for 30 minutes in static check verification as per well control procedure. Rig WOWS was attempted to solve killing problem using viscous fluid and CaCO3, but the success ratio is only 33% in 2019 to 2020.
There are at least 7 contributing factors to the initial killing process in producer well such as well control risks, well control barriers, kill fluid materials, procedures, sub surface characteristic, equipment and personnel capability. From the swim lane diagram, initial killing process failure contribute to well suspended. The root cause analysis is evaluated using the Current Reality Tree based on interview, discussion and observation. There are 4 root causes that contributes to the initial killing process success ratio. 2 of 4 root causes (i.e Scope of well barrier procedure only static check verification and Fluid design and Material selection is not sufficient to cure the loss) are the major contributors of the initial killing success ratio which will be evaluated later.
The wells in mature area in Dana Field like area 1 and 2 have sub surface characteristics the well is unable to sustain static hole volume and gas from oil vapour enter the well bore. Through a Focus Group Discussion, the team identified 4 potential alternatives to resolve the initial killing process. The evaluation of the best alternatives is identified using Kepner-Tregoe scoring matrix. The dynamic killing method for initial killing is evident as the best alternatives which fulfil all the must attributes and have the highest score of want attributes. This alternative has a high success ratio to solve the issue and contributes to the completion of WOWS job. In order to have an alignment with the proposed alternative, the Management of Change, Risk Assessment and updated Well Program are developed.
This initiative is already implemented in 10 killing problem wells with success ratio 100% and reduced suspended well.
