Description
Summary:Ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM) is a synthetic rubber with high mechanical properties and aging resistance. However, due to its crystalline structure, EPDM becomes more difficult to process. Rubber processing oil is added as a plasticizer which increases the processability of EPDM. Treated distilled aromatic extract (TDAE) is used as a rubber processing oil to replace distilled aromatic extract (DAE), which has a high content of carcinogenic substances. This research aims to investigate the effect of adding rubber processing oil with an amount of 0-50 phr on the processability, cure characteristics, and mechanical properties of EPDM as a preliminary study to develop local rubber track pads. Mooney viscosity test, visual observation, and macro filler dispersion testing were carried out to determine the processability of the EPDM compound. Cure characteristics of the EPDM compound were identified through rheometer testing. The crosslink density of the EPDM vulcanizate was measured by the swelling equilibrium method. The effect of increasing the amount of processing oil on the mechanical properties of EPDM was identified through hardness, abrasion, tensile, and tear tests. Density and specific gravity tests were carried out as supporting data. The results have shown that the processing of EPDM became more manageable with the increased amount of processing oil. On the other hand, there was a decrease in the mechanical properties of EPDM vulcanizate due to a decrease in the crosslink density. Optimization of the ease of processing and mechanical properties of EPDM with the addition of processing oil was carried out. The optimal amount of processing oil addition into the EPDM compound is 10-20 phr.
