Summary: | Social innovation is a widely developed idea in academia. Social innovation
practices have developed long ago but the diversity in definitions that exist make
its urgency often doubted. On the other hand, several studies state that there is
still a vital role of social innovation in supporting neo-endogenous rural
development which shows the opportunity for the existence of social innovation in
rural development. The literature related to social innovation shows that there is
an intervention of actors’ roles in the development of social innovation that is
carried out collaboratively hence implying the intervention of the networks.
However, the social innovation literature focuses more on the actor level and has
not discussed the relationship between actors in the social innovation process.
Therefore, this study aims to identify the influence of actor networks as a process
on social innovation in rural areas. This is explanatory research using a
qualitative research method and multiple case studies. This study shows the
existence of key characteristics, namely power, socioentrepreneurial abilities and
resources needed in actor networks since the early stages of the social innovation
process. This study finds that the absence of one or more key components in the
network process forms individual knowledge which affects the difficulty of
achieving legitimacy for institutional change as an effort to constrain and enable
actions. This influences the social changes that occur quickly because of the
cumulative actions of individuals without being mediated by institutional changes
so that it creates endogenous room to maneuver. However, the area that shows
the interaction of key components in the network indicates the existence of mutual
knowledge that opens up opportunities for participatory development because of
the legitimacy of institutional change. Social change occurs slowly, mediated by
institutional changes that have an impact on collective action from social
practices that minimize endogenous room to maneuver. |
