Summary: | A very rapid development of the industry makes information of technology and science
has become very accessible in a very fast and easy way. However, rapid industrial growth
also has negative impacts such as environmental pollution in almost parts of environment,
soil, air, and water. The most hazardous industrial waste which frequently be a concern is
the heavy metal cations. Lead (II), cadmium (II), nickel (II) are the example of heavy
metal cations which produced along the industrial process nowadays. Lead (II) is one of
heavy metal cations that are often become a major pollutant and very detrimental to
health.
Methods of lead (II) analysis which have been widely applied are liquid-liquid
extraction, precipitation, solid phase extraction, and ion-exchange chromatography.
Industrial waste in general have a very complex matrix which makes direct analysis of
lead content is very difficult to attempt. Therefore, here required an analytical method
which able to separate the metal cation lead (II) out of this complex system.
Ion imprinted polymer (IIP) is one of the methods which being developed today. This
method is based on solid phase extraction which makes use of polymer functionalization.
Polymer functionalization is a polymer formation process which produce polymer with
specific affinity to one species. In this study, have been successfully synthesized Pb(II)
imprinted polymer (Pb-IP) through the polymerization of poly(ethylene terephthalate)
crosslinked with divinyl benzene in the presence of Pb (II) - 4-(2-pyridilazo) resorcinol
complex.
Synthesis of Pb(II)-imprinted polymer was conducted by means of thermal method which
was performed under reflux for 7 hours at a temperature of (265±10) oC with the use of
antimony (III) oxide (Sb2O3) as catalyst. Pb(II) that was trapped in a polymer cavity was
released from this Pb(II)-imprinted polymer by means of leaching method using sodium
EDTA (Na2H2Y) 1 M. Determination of adsorption capacity of this Pb (II)-imprinted
polymer was conducted by eluting a hypothetical sample solution of Pb(II) into a column
(volume= 5 mL, diameter= 4 mm and length= 45 cm) that has been filled with the
material of Pb(II)-imprinted polymer. Maximum adsorption capacity for metal Pb(II) is
6.226 mg/g at pH 6 with a flow rate of 1 mL per hour. Polymers and copolymers which
have been synthesized were characterized using infrared spectrophotometry to determine the functional group. SEM-EDX also used in the characterization process to observe the
surface morphology and the presence of Pb(II) in the polymer matrix at once. |
