CHANGES IN THE SPATIAL VALUE OF TRADITIONAL HOUSES IN THE SARIBU RUMAH GADANG AREA AS A RESULT OF TOURISM-BASED COMMODIFICATION (HOMESTAY)

The Saribu Rumah Gadang area is an asset of Minangkabau cultural tourism, where in these areas there are hundreds of Rumah Gadangthat are neatly lined up and close to each other. Rumah Gadang is a traditional house that represents Minangkabau culture which is full of symbolic value and the function value of space that has been commonly concurred upon. However, as a tourist destination, Rumah Gadang in this area is vulnerable to change or commodification. Research problems related to the phenomenon of potentially uncontrollable commodification allow changes in the spatial value of Rumah Gadang in the Saribu Rumah Gadang area. Rumah Gadang, which functions as a residence and place for traditional activities, presently works as a homestay. This study aims to understand the changes in the spatial value of Rumah Gadang, which is worked as a homestay (the result of tourism-based commodification). There are 12 Rumah Gadang which are used as homestays in the Saribu Rumah Gadang area. This study took 10 samples of 12 Rumah Gadang because the others were not functioned as homestays by their owners for a while. In these 10 Rumah Gadang, it was found that the commodification of the Rumah Gadang had the potential result to change the spatial value of the Gadang House. This study used a sequential exploratory mixed method. Starting with the pre- research stage with field observations and interviews to understand the changes in the Rumah Gadang. Furthermore, quantitative data was obtained through the calculation of Space Syntax to understand the commodification changes in each research object. This study found that the commodification (change of composition) of Rumah Gadang was indicated by the addition of an area outside the main area of Rumah Gadang caused a change in the value of the Rumah Gadang itself. In addition, the addition of an area outside the main area of the Gadang House has an effect on the integrity value of the Gadang space based on the calculation of the Space Syntax, for example in the lanjar area (middle room). The lanjar area in some research objects is no longer the space with the highest integrity value. That is, the lanjar area has undergone a change in its symbolic value in one composition of Rumah Gadang. Then, the results of the quantitative analysis were verified with qualitative data to clarify the findings in the form of changes in the value of the Rumah Gadang room, which functioned as a homestay. In addition to providing scientific contributions regarding space and culture, the research output is expected to be used as a reference/evaluation for the development of cultural tourism, especially in West Sumatra
