Summary:ABSTRACT: <br /> <br /> <br /> 4-Acyl-5-pyrazolone derivative is well known as chelating ligand coordinating to the metal ion as hard lewis base. In the present work, 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-benzoyl-5-pyrazolone have been synthesized and examined their solvent extraction behavior towards trivalent lanthanoids (La 3+, Ce 3+ and Gd 3+). HPMBP is yellow powder and its characterisation was established by melting point, IR, and 1 H NMR spectral data. Individual solvent extraction were performed in stoppered glass vials. The aqueous phase consisted of Lanthanide ion in HNO3 0,1 M while the organic phase contained required amount of the ligand dissolved in chloroform. Ce 3+ is better extracted from aqueous phase than La 3+ and Gd 3+ at equal ligand concentration. The optimum condition of cerium extraction occurs at pH of 4,61, with an extraction time of 60 minutes and settle time for 90 minutes. In that conditon, all of Rare Earth Elements (REE) have distribution ratio that are nearly same. The separation selectivity of Gd with La and Ce is not good enough for separation purpose. The development of research in pyrazolone derivative is important for enrichment methods, separation and purification of REE.
