INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/67283 The water scarcity problem drives to the advancement of various water purification techniques. One of them is membrane distillation, a separation process that is widely used in desalination. The main problem that comes with membrane distillation is fouling and wetting, which can occur in high salinity solutions or hypersaline brine. Therefore, a study needs to be conducted to develop a strategy to understand both of those phenomena. This study aims to achieve sustainable membrane distillation operation for hypersaline brine and to propose an optimum working condition by optimizing the operating parameter and evaluate its effect on fouling and wetting of the membrane. This study is carried out in a submerged direct contact membrane distillation (SDCMD) configuration using two hypersaline solutions. The first variation is a solution of sodium chloride (NaCl) and the second variation is a mixture of sodium chloride (NaCl), calcium chloride (CaCl2), and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). Varied feed solution is done to observe the effect compound solubility has on the overall membrane performance. Operating condition of SDCMD include Temperature at 50 ?, and 70? and velocity of 0.48 m/s, and 1.23 m/s. The experiments showed that the optimum operating parameter for both of the feed solutions is at the temperature of 70? and the velocity of 0.48 m/s. In said conditions, the permeate volume obtained is the highest, whilst maintaining a satisfactory quality of distilled feed. text |

The water scarcity problem drives to the advancement of various water purification
techniques. One of them is membrane distillation, a separation process that is widely used
in desalination. The main problem that comes with membrane distillation is fouling and
wetting, which can occur in high salinity solutions or hypersaline brine. Therefore, a study
needs to be conducted to develop a strategy to understand both of those phenomena. This
study aims to achieve sustainable membrane distillation operation for hypersaline brine
and to propose an optimum working condition by optimizing the operating parameter and
evaluate its effect on fouling and wetting of the membrane. This study is carried out in a
submerged direct contact membrane distillation (SDCMD) configuration using two
hypersaline solutions. The first variation is a solution of sodium chloride (NaCl) and the
second variation is a mixture of sodium chloride (NaCl), calcium chloride (CaCl2), and
sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). Varied feed solution is done to observe the effect
