The elderly and children are part of the community group. Based on the population census conducted by Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) in 2020, 32% of the children age group and 10% of the elderly age group of the total population in Indonesia. However, many elderly and children in Indonesia are still neglected, and their social welfare is not fulfilled. The Ministry of Social Affairs noted that there was 2.4 million neglected elderly in Indonesia and 1.8 million potentially neglected elderly. In addition, the population of neglected children in Indonesia has reached a high value, up to 4.1 million people (Ministry of Social Affairs). In Bogor Regency, there were 166,570 neglected elderly and 42,827 neglected children in 2020 (Badan Pusat Statistik).
Neglect in the elderly can occur due to not having a family, the inability of the family to care for, and conditions that make it impossible to be cared for at home. At the same time, neglect in children can occur due to the death of both parents, the inability of parents to care for them, divorce, or problems in the household. The neglected elderly need services because of unfavorable conditions, such as decreased body functions, decreased health conditions, and social and economic limitations. Abandoned children also have unfavorable conditions, namely stunted growth and development, cannot take education, and closed personalities.
Both neglected elderly and neglected children experience psychological problems such as loneliness, lack of confidence, and other psychological disorders that can develop into depression. The results of research by Meta (2011) show that social support can be a solution to prevent loneliness and depression. Social support is the presence of other people who can be relied on to provide assistance, encouragement, acceptance, and attention to improve the welfare of the individual concerned.
The relationship between generations is one form of social support that can occur in neglected elderly and children. Intergenerational relationships are defined as relationships that exist between two or more different generations. Relationships between generations can occur if there is reciprocity between neglected elderly and neglected children. Reciprocity can be in the form of the elderly teaching experiences to children and children teaching the elderly related to the latest technology, the elderly acting as parent figures for children and children acting as grandchildren of the elderly, and both parties being friends in activities with each other. The benefits presented by intergenerational relationships are improving the quality of life for neglected elderly and neglected children by eliminating feelings of loneliness, depression, and providing a sense of purpose for both parties.
Intergenerational homes can be a form of architectural intervention in building intergenerational relationships for neglected elderly and children. This intergenerational orphanage project aims to prevent loneliness and depression in neglected elderly and children by creating interaction spaces to ignite intergenerational relationships on both sides.
The project design location is in Dramaga District, Bogor Regency. The project design results are expected to provide benefits to the target user in the form of increased interaction between generations, the presence of reciprocity between the two parties, the presence of benefits from reciprocity that occur, and preventing loneliness and depression in neglected elderly and neglected children.
The design issues in this project are creating an environment that encourages interaction between generations, implementing trauma and depression prevention designs, architectural designs for low-income people, and designing spaces that are friendly to the elderly and children. These four problems are answered with the concept of “Inter(gener)action: Intergenerational Restorative Social Home,” which has three main points: engaging social activities, suitable for all ages, and comfortable for the poor. Based on the concept, this project is divided into five areas: interaction area, resting area, restoration area, production area, and public area.
