North Buton Regency is the furthest territory of Buton sultanate formed in 2007.
The district has the lowest number of weaving productions on Buton Island.
However, the use of the original Buton Weaving on traditional occasions in the
North Palace of Kulisusu Buton is still very viscous, and even new conditions have
emerged in the use, production and meaning associated with Buton Weaving
towards a more mass and industrial direction. This study was conducted to
investigate aspects of meaning, production and utility in Buton Weaving in North
Buton and understand the comparison between the original Buton Weaving and the
Modified Buton Weaving (industry). The ethnographic method is carried out by
interview techniques on figures who were influential in the preservation and
development of Buton Weaving in North Buton and observation of traditional
rituals at the North Buton Kulisususu Palace to find out the use of buton weaving
in traditional rituals. The results of the analysis show the relationship of three
important aspects related to Buton Weaving, namely the production process, utility
and meaning. There are two contradictory conditions of Buton Weaving, namely
The Original Buton Weaving which is bound by customary rules and Buton
Weaving which is more freely modified (Industrial), mass-produced and created
into contemporary art. Further research needs to be done to document the
customary rules that are currently passed down through hereditary customs in
order for North Buton to have valid sources to refer to. |
