The formulation of gel were developed by using Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) as gelling agent with two different concentrations of benzalkonium chloride are 0,06 % and 0,3 %. Evaluation of gel preparations including physical appearance, viscosity, and pH and then the spermicide activity of each formula was tested. Formulation of gel with 0,06 % of benzalkonium chloride with HPC and HPMC as gelling agent killed mice sperms 42,7 0,58 % and 44,7 1,15 % and formulation of gel with 0,3 % of benzalkonium chloride with HPC and HPMC as gelling agent killed mice sperms 62 0,00 %. The death of sperms in gel preparation with benzalkonium chloride have significance difference with gel preparation without benzalkonium chloride. Preparation of gel without benzalkonium chloride with HPC and HPMC as gelling agent killed mice sperms 68,3 2,52 % and 64,3 1,53 %. Percent recovery of benzalkonium chloride with concentration 0,06 % and 0,3 % using HPC and HPMC as gelling agent are 92,92 %; 99,41 %; 101,60 %; and 102,40 %, respectively. Based on the spermicide activity result, formulations of gel for spermicide preparation are formulation with 0,3 % benzalkonium chloride with HPMC 2 % or HPC 4 % as gelling agent. <br /> text
