Description
Summary:This research will be focused on designing optimal setting methods for the PowerSwing Blocking function in distance relay. The background is based on the limitation of the swings detection method and parameter setting of PSB on commercial numerical distance relay, such as Siemens 7SL87. Siemens 7SL87 uses conventional detection methods with concentric zone characteristics and continuous impedance calculations. The parameters that can be set are the zone to be blocked and the Max. Blocking Time. First, a sensitivity analysis of transient stability will be carried out to see the characteristics of power swings that may occur in a system due to faults or contingencies. The results will be used to determine the parameters of the zone to be blocked, which is the innermost protection zone that can be reached in stable swings. While the Max. Blocking Time is set based on the longest duration of impedance inside the protection zone. Last, the optimized PSB function is recommended to be tested in Real-Time simulation using the Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) scheme to get a more accurate result that represents the actual condition. In this study, the recommended setting method has been tested to be able to provide PSB performance as expected both in stable swing, unstable swing, and short circuits when swings occur.
