Beside pictures, they communicate verbally and text to express an idea for a particular space. In interior design learning, there is a design assistance process between students and lecturers who have verbal miscommunication problems. This problem occurs due to differences in understanding of the terms used by students and lecturers in describing the impression of interior spaces which suspected because of the mental imagery gap between them which results in different perceptions. To reduce communication problems both verbally and in text, this study aims to find out how interior designers with various knowledge backgrounds describe the impression of residential and commercial interior spaces so that the elements that make up the interior term can be found in the perception of space images. This research is qualitative with grounded theory strategy. Data collection techniques used are literature studies, questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions with students, interior lecturers, and professional interior design practitioners. The results of interviews and FGDs were transcribed and analyzed using the Spradley method and intersemiotic translation. The results of the analysis show that the elements that make up the term to describe the impression of space are divided into three categories, namely atmosphere, visual characteristics, and design style. These three categories are the main elements which are used as models for the formation of terms for the impression of interior space images. This model is expected to help verbal-visual communication between students and lecturers to reduce differences in perception. text
