Summary: | Children aged 9- and 10-year-olds tend to see works of art as replicas of reality.
However, the forms of contemporary art are now very diverse. This study aims to
understand how children aged 9 and 10 years appreciate contemporary works of
art, Wot Batu as well as the internal and external factors that influenced the form
of appreciation for each child. The decision to choose 2 children as samples was
due to deepen the influence of internal and external factors in each sample. Data
was collected through observations of children that was facing the artworks, Visual
Thinking Strategies method, and interviews with samples. The data were analyzed
qualitatively using the theory of children's appreciation of art by Laura
Schneebaum and Gardner-Winner, the theory of appreciation level by Primadi
Tabrani, and the theory of children's creativity by Elizabeth B. Hurlock.
The result shows that children appreciate works of art through verbal, movement,
and cognitive. Verbal appreciation is shown through expressions of admiration,
questions about the work, as well as statements of opinion regarding the work and
matters relating to the work. Motion appreciation is shown by touching,
demonstrating the creation of the work, as well as by unconscious movement that
explores the work in form. Cognitive appreciation is shown by the child's ability to
describe the work in terms of form, manufacturing process, size, similarities with
real objects, as well as metaphors that are understood from the work. The stages of
appreciation of the sample are in accordance with their age, namely the concrete
operational stage and the stage of feeling into content with the work. External
factors that influence the appreciation are birth order, gender, support for activities
aside from school, the closeness of the parents to the art world, the socio-economic
background, and support for each child's hobbies. Given intervention by the guide
are asking questions about the work to children, providing stimulation in the form
of information on the theme of the work as a whole, information about the content
of the work, and providing opportunities to see the work as a whole and its
relationship to the surrounding elements. The results of this study can be used for
educators in art exhibition halls as the basis for children's education programs and
outcomes that can be achieved by children with certain criteria. |
