The various of reservoir characteristics in oil fields in Indonesia has challenges to find suitable surfactants. In this study, an oleic acid-based gemini surfactant was synthesized by using maleic anhydride as a spacer and adding a sulfonic group to the alkene functional group. The synthesized anionic surfactants have been confirmed through TLC (Thin Layer Chromatography), spectroscopy FT-IR, and NMR. The results of TLC in mixture of methanol, ethylene glycol, and n-hexane (80: 2:10, %v/v) as mobile phase, showed that the addition of a sulfonic group increase the hydrophilicity of the surfactant and gave a smaller retention distance. Based on FTIR data, anionic surfactants have been successfully synthesized and obtained absorption peak from the vibration of the S=O group in wave number around 1100 cm·1 Based on NMR measurements, protons in the sulfonic group obtained in chemical shift 2.62 ppm. The synthesized nonionic and anionic surfactants have HLB (Hydrophile Lyphophile Balance) values of 13.03 and 18.68, which indicate that both surfactants are oil-to-water (O/W) emulsifying agents. The solution stability test, phase behavior test, and interfacial tension test tested the compatibility of anionic surfactants. The results of the compatibility test showed that the anionic surfactant with a concentration of 1.00 %w/w at a salinity of 3.000 ppm and 4.000 ppm was compatible with oil samples from Field X. This was shown through the formation of a homogeneous phase for seven days, formation of microemulsion at a temperature of 65 °C, and interface tension value of 1,46 x 10-2 mN/m which is classified as the ultralow condition. The results of compatibility test showed that the sulfonated gemini diester maleate surfactant can potentially to be applied in increasing oil recovery. text |
