Summary: | Kesepuhan Raden Rahmat Islamic Boarding School is a religious educational institution for the elderly. Observation and discussion with Raden Rahmat Boarding School show that elderly students are enthusiastic about learning and often study independently in their free time. However, Raden Rahmat Boarding School does not yet have suitable independent study facilities. As a result, a product called "KitaBelajar" or "Kios Pintar untuk Belajar" is designed that elderly students can freely use for independent study.
Kios Pintar "KitaBelajar" is a form of self-service kiosk (SSK) and self-service technology (SST). SST is an interactive technology that enables users to obtain services without having to interact directly with the service provider. SST has issues, particularly among older users who find it difficult to use. According to research, older users reported difficulty in reading and understanding, as well as fatigue when using SST for an extended period of time. These issues arise due to SST’s designs are not elderly-friendly and the design process does consider elderly users’ characteristics.
Therefore, "KitaBelajar" is designed using a user-centered design approach to ensure an accessible and easy-to-use product for elderly users. The design is evaluated with formative usability testing afterwards. This study generates 1 (one) senior persona canvas consisting of 11 (eleven) components that successfully represented elderly users’ characteristics and met 100% insight needs for “KitaBelajar” design process, 1 (one) kiosk frame design with average satisfaction score of 4 before iteration and answers 10 (ten) user problems, and 1 (one) application interface design with an average SUS score 73.3 before iteration and answers 10 (ten) user problems.
