Summary: | Widuri village is one of the areas in Pemalang Regency which is located in the coastal t”0n yy iourism zone. The design location is located on a former circuit land that will be used as an elderly-friendly green open space which has the potential to become an attraction as well because apart from utilizing the visuals of the sea, the existence of green open space in Pemalang Regency has not been spread well, especially the need of green open space for the elderly group. Considering that according to data from Badan Pusat Statistic (BPS) in 2017, Pemalang Regency was dominated by the elderly population.
Green open space in which various kinds of natural and artificial plants grow. The existence of green open space is to facilitate community activities in certain environments that are needed as a place to interact, exercise, recreation, and enjoy the beauty of space. The focus of green open space users in this design is none other than elderly group.
Elderly is individuals who have entered the age of 60 years or older with limited physical and psychological abilities. As people age, the needs and abilities of the elderly will decrease and require assistance from others to carry out activities. So that elderly-friendly UGS is needed as a forum to support and improve the health and fitness of the elderly by paying attention to different needs and characteristics. One of the activities to support health for the elderly is to exercise. Exercise helps to reactivate the functions of elderly's muscles and joints that are starting to weaken. Some types of exercise that can be done by the elderly are such as walking leisurely, yoga, muscle stretching, gymnastics, etc. In addition to improving health, exercise also increases the happiness of the elderly since it can develop social interactions among individuals that can reduce stress levels for the elderly.
The design methods used were pre-design phases, site assessment phases (LaGro), and design phases. The pre-design phase included the collection of secondary information data related to the discussion of the design location. The secondary data were obtained through research journals, online news, website articles, and related books. The site assessment phases followed the process described by LaGro, namely the stages of analysis, concept development, and design implementation. The design phases were the results of the proposed design of elderly-friendly green open space in Widuri Village, Pemalang Regency. Case study also used as additional information analysis to support the application of the required landscape design.
Criteria of the design are created from the theory and analysis of the needs and characters of the elderly. The design criteria include elements in improving the health of the elderly which are divided into comfort, safety, activities, sustainability, space program, and vegetation. Comfort and safety can be interpreted as the ease of the elderly in accessibility in terms of pedestrian paths, drop offs, crossing points, and circulation paths that can accommodate the elderly so that they are evenly distributed in exploring and enjoying the space at the design location. Space program is generated from the identification of elderly activities in green open space which will produce facilities in the design area based on the needs and desires of the users. Sustainability is related to the use of softscape and hardscape covering materials, in terms of both maintenance and longevity ease. And the selection of vegetation in the design area is adjusted as aromatherapy, vegetation of shade, guide, as well as vegetation to reduce air pollution in the design area and the surrounding environment.
The planned space program is a related requirement of the main, supporting, and complementary facilities in the design of elderly-friendly green open space. The results for the main facilities are in the form of open plaza (gymnastics and yoga), walking track, outdoor gym area, relaxing area, and relaxation area. The supporting facilities are related to recreation, gardening, and creativity area (sewing, weaving, painting, drawing), and health consultation room. Meanwhile, the complementary facilities are such as shelter, prayer room, management room and motorised vehicle parking area.
Elderly-friendly green open space in Widuri Village, Pemalang Regency is a design concept that prioritises the needs of the elderly in improving health that is adapted to the character of the elderly to be comfortable and safe in carrying out activities. The supporting concept and its criteria is divided into zoning, accessibility, attraction, and other supports spatially. Furthermore, an elderly-friendly UGS design will be created and is expected to be able to contribute optimally.
