Risk of getting infected by pertussis however is significantly lower through the uses of vaccines. Pertussis immunization is done through the uses of acellular pertussis vaccine (aP) or whole cell pertussis vaccine (wP) which commonly found in DTaP or DTwP forms. Tradeoffs between DTaP and DTwP vaccine is found in its price, long term protection, and risk of side effects. DTaP vaccine although pricier and having a shorter protection length is recognized as a safe option with its lower risk of side effects. Although the use of the DTwP vaccine can be found in general due to the free immunization program executed by the Government of Indonesia, the use of DTaP vaccine can still be found in private sector. Bio Farma as Indonesia’s sole vaccine producer and distributors of DTP vaccine is contemplating whether it is advantageous to add DTaP vaccine as its new product to be sold to private market and if possible to replace its current DTwP vaccine. The aim of this thesis is to investigate potential consumers (parents) preference for DTaP and DTwP and its attributes. Discrete choice experiment (DCE) was used to elicit stated preferences from 200 of Indonesians parents mainly located in Java and Sumatra. Internal and external analysis is also done to determine company advantage in producing DTP vaccine. Results suggest that there is no clear and significant consumers’ preference regarding the use of DTaP and DTwP vaccine although there is a significant preference for higher efficacy and long term protection. Bacuse of that, the use of DTwP vaccine is deemed unable to be replaced with DTaP vaccine. DTaP vaccine however could be added as a substitute vaccine product sold to private market to encourage infant immunization. It is also advantageous for Bio Farma to cooperate with DTaP producers or patent holders to skip resource heavy research and development activity to maximize profits. text |
