The May 27 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake occured with moment magnitude (Mw) 6.3. This earthquake caused severely damages mostly in Bantul region although relatively far from the hiposenter. This phenomena maybe caused by the amplitude amplification in the thick sediment layer around Bantul area. In this study, the sediment thickness is infered from gravity data.
The non-linear inversion method is applied to infere the top of basement depth. The sediment layer is assumed as one layer model with a constant density value. The weighted least square inversion is used and the least square technique is applied to solve the matrix equation. The inversion technique is tested on synthetic data and give a good enough result where the actual synthetic model can be approached well.
Implementation on field data showed a varied top basement depth result. The maximum depth reached 2 km lies around Bantul area. These results are appropriate with magnetoteluric study and the previous gravity study.
