THE INFLUENCE OF SAMPLE DIMENSION ANALYSIS ON UNIAXIAL COMPRESSIVE TEST USING NUMERIC MODEL BASED ON HOEK-BROWN FAILURE CRITERIA

Geotechnics is one of the critical aspects of designing a safe and stable slope. A Geotechnical analysis is conducted by considering several rock mass properties, one of which is rock mechanical properties. One commonly used rock mechanical property is the UCS value obtained from the uniaxial compre...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/67841 Geotechnics is one of the critical aspects of designing a safe and stable slope. A Geotechnical analysis is conducted by considering several rock mass properties, one of which is rock mechanical properties. One commonly used rock mechanical property is the UCS value obtained from the uniaxial compressive test. The uniaxial compressive test is conducted on a cylinder rock sample with a certain height-todiameter ratio. The height-to-diameter ratio greatly impacts the obtained UCS value. John (1972) conducted a study about the effect of the dimension of rock samples on UCS value and the result showed that the increase in the height-todiameter ratio would decrease the UCS value. This research aims to model the uniaxial compressive strength test numerically using FLAC2D software based on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The data used in this research is secondary data for very good rock class from a previous study conducted by Hoek and Brown (1997). Each rock sample is made with a fixed diameter of 50 mm and a variable height-to-ratio diameter. The results of this numerical modeling lead to the same conclusion as the previous study by John (1920), that the UCS value decreased as the ratio of height to diameter of the rock sample increased. text
