Coal deposit that spread in all of Indonesia has a wide variety of qualities, so it needs parametric studies of coal quality that affects gasification reactivity. This study focused on coal thermal characterization when pyrolysis and gasification happen. Three samples used in this study have a source from Meulaboh Basin (BB-1 and BB-2) and Barito Basin (BB-3). Coal quality was obtained from proximate analysis and calorific value determination. The sample gasification reactivity test was carried out by using the thermogravimetric analysis method which included when the sample was heated from 50oC to 900oC with a temperature increase of 10oC/min using an Argon atmosphere (pyrolysis), when the sample has conditioned at 900oC for 10 minutes, and when the atmosphere has changed to 25% air and 75% Argon with 900oC temperature. BB-1 and BB-2 coal are rated sub-bituminous C, while BB-3 coal is rated highvolatile A bituminous. TG/DTG thermogram shows that the three samples run into pyrolysis and gasification processes. In the gasification process, the BB-1 and BB-2 sample indicate more mass decreasing, thus their reactivity is more than the BB-3 sample. Low-rated coal is more reactive in the gasification process due to unstable active functional group in huge amounts, more porous, and has a larger active surface area. Decreasing rate of mass in the BB-2 sample is a little higher in the first step of gasification than the BB-1 sample. Coal with high-ash content is more reactive than coal with low-ash content. It is due to inorganic substances or metal oxides that give a catalytic effect in gasification reaction. text
