DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNICATION, DATA, AND USER INTERFACE SUBSYSTEM OF BLACK SOLDIER FLY LARVAE FARM MONITORING AND CONTROLLING SYSTEM

Black soldier fly (BSF), Hermetia illucens, is an insect whose larvae are proven to be effective in treating organic waste. However, without proper environmental conditions, the development and metabolism of BSF larvae can be impaired. Therefore, to maximize waste treatment, it is necessary to mo...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/67892 Black soldier fly (BSF), Hermetia illucens, is an insect whose larvae are proven to be effective in treating organic waste. However, without proper environmental conditions, the development and metabolism of BSF larvae can be impaired. Therefore, to maximize waste treatment, it is necessary to monitor the environmental conditions in which BSF larvae are cultivated. Unfortunately, the majority of BSF farms in the world, especially in Indonesia, still rely on human labor and simple technology to collect data and monitor environmental conditions. Thus, a solution was formulated to monitor and control the environmental conditions of BSF larval farms which includes measuring of substrate pH, substrate temperature, substrate humidity, and air humidity of the BSF farm that can be carried out remotely and automatically based on the Internet of Things (IoT) system. In the IoT architecture, some of the important parts include the communication subsystem, database management, and the user interface. In its implementation, the MQTT protocol is used for communication of hardware systems with software. For the data subsystem, MySQL database is used for data management and a PHP-based program is built to process the data required by the system. For the user interface, a responsive web app is created to avoid access limitations due to device differences, using the Laravel framework. By using this system, data from sensors located on farms are successfully sent and stored in a database with an average data transmission delay of 0.8125 seconds. In addition, the interface created has fulfilled all the functionality needed by the system to communicate with the user. Thus, the proposed system has successfully supported the functionality of the BSF Larvae Environmental Monitoring and Control System. text
