FABRICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF DIALYSIS MEMBRANE FOR Cu(II) SEPARATION FROM SOLUTION CONTAINS Pb(II)

ABSTRACT:

Currently, two kinds of dialysis membranes were fabricated and characterized. They were PMMA membranes blended with two types of complexing agent, i.e. dithizone(PMMA-dithizone) and oxin (PMMA-oxin). Both membranes were...

They were PMMA membranes blended with two types of complexing agent, i.e. dithizone(PMMA-dithizone) and oxin (PMMA-oxin). Both membranes were used for Cu(II) separation from solution containing Pb(II) as a model of a diaboleite mineral. The concentration of Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions in the feed and permeate solutions was determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The experiment showed that copper(II) ions did not permeate through both membranes. It might be due to the membrane morphology which was dense, as it was revealed by the microstucture of the membranes. Nevertheless, a small amount of copper(II) could permeate through the PMMA-oxin membrane. PMMA-oxin membrane was then immersed in a 6-ppm Cu(II) solution. Analysis of the solution after two days of immersion showed that Cu(II) concentration can not be detected anymore. However, the same phenomenon was not observed for the case of PMMA-dithizone. It was supposed to be caused by less polarity that dithizone had than oxin did. Thus, the copper(II) and lead(II) ions were difficult to interact with PMMA-dithizone. text
