Summary: | Particleboard is one type of material whose use is every day in society. Most of them are used as raw materials for making furniture. As a form of innovation and paying attention to environmental aspects, particleboard can also be produced from bamboo waste by using resin damar as an adhesive to substitute synthetic adhesive such as urea and phenol formaldehyde. The objective of this study was to characterize the particleboard produced added on physical and mechanical properties, and to investigate the effect of compressing time, compression temperature and amount of resin added to particleboard. This is done to obtain the physical and mechanical properties in the form of optimum density, thickness swelling, water adsorption, and modulus of rupture. This research was conducted on compression times of 10 and 20 minutes, i.e. compression temperature (100 and 180oC) and amount of resin added (25 and 30%), thus it is desirable to acquire a density of 0,8 g/cm3. The results showed that the optimum variation combination was at 30% of the amount of resin added, 10 minutes of compression time, and 100oC of compression temperature showing that the factors affected density, thickness swelling, water adsorption, and modulus of rupture of particleboard. The best characteristics of particleboard obtained Density of 0.784 g/cm3, Thickness Swelling of 0,4% at 30 min, 3,03% at 60 min, 8,4% at 90 min, and 27,02% at 120 minutes, Water Adsorption of 36,29% at 2 hours and 123,58% at 24 hours, MOR of 70 kgf/cm3. In addition, the hardness value of the material board is also obtained on the Mohs scale, which is in the range of the 6-7 Mohs Scale. The results of the manufacture and testing of particleboard are then applied to the form of a Watch case. The watch designs are then compared with commercial watch products made from wood to analyze their advantages and suitability for the market. In terms of physical and mechanical properties, the particleboard obtained from the research did not meet the standard of SNI 03-2105-2006 and commercial watch products. However, in terms of aesthetics and cost estimation, the research results of particleboard watches are superior. |
