Summary: | The use of diesel dual fuel is one of the solutions in reducing the use of diesel fuel nowadays, the use of diesel dual fuel is mostly done by converting an existing diesel engine. However, the conversion of the diesel engine into a diesel dual fuel engine is quite complex and will have effect on the engine. Therefore, the study of effect of converting diesel fuel into diesel dual fuel is needed. In this study, the engine performance in terms of power and torque, emission, and fuel consumption were investigated in order to know the effect of converting direct injection diesel engine into dual CNG-Diesel fuel.
The study was done by doing a road test of a heavy-duty truck powered by a 6-cylinder direct injection diesel engine. A diesel dual fuel converter kit was installed in the engine without changing the engine component and injection timing. One of the components that was set in the engine was the governor to reduce the diesel fuel flowrate to 30 % and by that the 70% of fuel was compressed natural gas
The test result showed that that the conversion increased the power of the engine, but the emission after the conversion actually showed a significant increase of unburned hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide. This content led to improper combustion. Other than that, the fuel consumption in terms of Rp/km decreased because the price of natural gas in Indonesia is way cheaper than diesel fuel. So, it can be concluded that the conversion of diesel dual fuel increased the power and decreased the fuel consumption, but with the original diesel injection timing, the emission is way higher.
