Summary: | Construction technology is defined as a collection of tools, equipment, materials, software, and construction execution methods. Especially in material technology, the most widely used by construction actors are concrete materials and steel materials. However, the development of these two main materials turned out to be incomparable, where steel materials are less developed than concrete. This can be seen from the history of construction steel technology in Indonesia which only occurred in the early days when steel began to develop in Indonesia, namely around the 1970s when Krakatau Steel was inaugurated. The history of variations in the types and sizes of construction steel materials has not changed much, variations in steel construction products or steel structures dominated by bridges and industrial buildings, as well as quality standards and steel construction design standards which from year to year always adopt from outside parties or other countries such as Japan and America. Due to these conditions, the use of steel by construction business actors in construction projects is only an alternative option, not the main choice. Based on the results of literature reviews and interviews with various parties involved, it was concluded that there are various challenges of construction steel technology in terms of its use in construction products in Indonesia, namely the influence of the underdeveloped steel industry due to dependence on importing both raw materials and steel products. This condition certainly causes a high fluctuation in steel prices and construction steel suppliers who are difficult to develop due to price competition, where the price of imported steel can be cheaper than local steel but with good quality. In addition, there are other challenges from the lack of number and distribution of construction steel suppliers, the limitations of steel construction professional associations and the number of publications, as well as the limited number of steel construction workers in Indonesia, both experts and skilled personnel.
