It is essential to find a clean and renewable alternative to fossil fuel. One promising method of clean energy generation is the fuel cell (FC). One of the most commonly used FC is the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). PEMFC uses the electrochemical reaction of H2 and O2 gases to produce energy while only generating water and heat as waste. One essential component of the PEMFC is the ion exchange membrane which is a solid polymer electrolyte. another energy conversion method is the redox flow battery (RFB), which is an electrochemical device that stores energy in two solutions containing different redox pairs. Ion exchange membrane is also an important component in RFB. Ionic liquids (IL) are salts with a melting point lower than 100 °C. Properties of IL such as wide electrochemical window, high proton conductivity, and great thermal stability attract numerous attention for their development as a composite ionic liquid membrane. In this research, a composite ionic liquid membrane will be tested as IEM. Results of the experiments are that polyamide polymer and IL [ViMeIm] were succesfully synthesized. The synthesis results have been characterized using salt solubility test, iodine test for double bonds, and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). However, the membrane produced from the solvent casting process is still brittle and its conductivity performance has not been tested. text |
