THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT ELECTRODE MONTAGE ON THE ALPHA FREQUENCY BAND EEG SIGNAL IN RESTING STATE

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a method commonly used in neuroscience research to record electrical activity in the brain with electrodes attached to the scalp. A potential difference measurement system or montage is needed for EEG analysis in EEG measurement. Based on the principles of physics, t...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/68457 Electroencephalography (EEG) is a method commonly used in neuroscience research to record electrical activity in the brain with electrodes attached to the scalp. A potential difference measurement system or montage is needed for EEG analysis in EEG measurement. Based on the principles of physics, the concept of potential measurement depends on the measurement reference point, this is a factor for considering the localization and lateralization of the EEG signal. This study conducted a quantitative comparative analysis of the montage selection to determine its effect on the alpha band EEG signal measured using a clinical EEG device on 17 healthy subjects with their eyes closed and eyes open. The montages used were ipsilateral A1-A2 referential montage, bipolar longitudinal montage, and average montage found on the EEG device used. Then the results of the processed EEG signal recording show that the referential montage A1-A2 in general provides higher Power Spectral Density and signal coherence calculations than the other two montages because it has a higher signal amplitude and synchronization and minimal distortion. The EEG results for the eye-closed condition were higher than the open-eye condition and were confirmed by the three montages, this indicates that in the closed-eye condition, the subject was in a state of complete rest according to the alpha wave categorization. text
