ANALYSIS OF TREE USE BY JAVAN GIBBON (HYLOBATES MOLOCH), JAVAN SURILI (PRESBYTIS COMATA), AND JAVAN LANGUR (TRACHYPITHECUS AURATUS) IN GUNUNG TILU NATURE RESERVE, WEST JAVA

The Gunung Tilu Nature Reserve (CAGT) is a habitat for three Javan endemic primates, namely the Javan gibbon (Hylobates moloch), the Javan surili (Presbytis comata), and the Javan langur (Trachypithecus auratus). In carrying out primate conservation efforts, CAGT cooperates with The Aspinal Foundati...

In carrying out primate conservation efforts, CAGT cooperates with The Aspinal Foundation (TAF) in the rehabilitation and re-introduction of primates. Re-introduction is an attempt to establish a population of a species in an area that became its habitat in the past, but now the population has disappeared or is extinct. These three primates have similar needs, both for food and for the use of space. Therefore, overlapping niches between species can occur and have an impact on not meeting the needs of each species. This study aims to analyze the use of trees by Javan gibbons, Javan surili, and Javan langurs, as well as to calculate niche overlap related to the use of tree species and levels used by the three primates in carrying out their activities. Data were collected using exploration methods and behavioral observations related to the use of tree species and levels in each primate. Data analysis was carried out using statistical analysis, as well as determining the Pianka Index to calculate the level of niche overlap. The results showed that the Javan gibbon, Javan surili, and Javan langur mostly used the puspa tree (Schima wallichii). Javan langurs mostly carried out their activities in strata D (16-20 m), Javan gibbons in strata E (11-15 m), and Javan surili in strata F (6-10 m). All three primates showed niche overlap related to the use of tree species and levels in the moderate to high range. text
