Summary:ABSTRACT:

Batik is one of Indonesian heritage that expresses the combination between art and technology. Batik had developed and achieved on top level of its design, making process and technique. There are many things can be revealed from a batik such as cultural background, belief, custom and life manners, environment, taste and skill.

Most places in Javanese island have the tradition of making batik and so it does in Semarang. Semarang had become one of the most important north-coast batik centres at 18th century since the Chinese trader and European people passed it. Chinese and European cultures had major influences to the development of north-coast batik in Semarang. Among the European people, there was Franquemont, an Indo-European woman who loved batik and owned a batik business. Her batik had it specific color and design which made it different from the other common north-coast batik.

The research of Franquemont batik is using qualitative descriptive method of research. Aesthetic approach covering aesthetic ideology, style dynamic, expression technique and the influence of batik to peoples life style during that time. The analysis of Franquemont batik is more stressed to two major points: first is aesthetic visual which covers art elements and principles and second is analysis using the style theories to analyze basic elements, shape relation and quality of this Franquemont batik.

The result from visual analysis of Franquemont batik using design elements and principles is that there are specific pattern of shape, color, balance and repetition. These revealed the skills of those people who made batik at that time. There are also different styles of repetition in Franquemont batik: different position of patterns or facing opposite from one to other patterns. The ornament of Franquemont batik is much of the nature, made with very detail and complicated. The result from style expression analysis is that the Chinese, European and Javanese cultures have major influence to Franquemont batik. The relation among the dynamic, detail and complicated shapes of ornaments reveal to the high quality of Franquemont batik. The conclusion of the style analysis of Franquemont is that there are symptoms of eclectic process, which is the mixture of the finest values of Chinese, European and Javanese cultures that represent in a batik.
