MARINE HEATWAVES CHARACTERISTICS IN INDONESIAâS FISHERIES MANAGEMENT AREA (IFMA) 713
This study aims to determine the characteristics of marine heatwaves (MHWs) in the Indonesia’s Fisheries Management Area (IFMA) 713 which includes the Makassar Strait, Flores Sea, Bali Sea, and Bone Bay. The main data used in this study is sea surface temperature (SST) data for 1982–2021 (40 years)...

The main data used in this study is sea surface temperature (SST) data for 1982–2021 (40 years) sourced from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Wind data from the European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecast (ECMWF), Niño 3.4 Index and Dipole Mode Index from NOAA are also used. The method used is statistical method. It was found that the average frequency, duration, and maximum intensity were 1.5–2.6 events per year, 6–12 days per event, and 1.1–1.7 ?. The results of the calculation of the frequency and duration trends show a significant positive linear trend. While the maximum intensity parameter shows a negative linear trend which is not significant. From the temporal analysis of MHWs parameters over the last 40 years, it was found that there were unusual MHWs occurrences in 1998 and 2016 which were the longest and strongest. In addition, local factors (wind) and remote forcing (El Niño Southern Oscillation and Indian Ocean Dipole) were analysed to investigate their relation to the occurrence of MHWs in WPPNRI 713. It was found that in 1998 and 2016, strong MHWs coincided with weak wind, strong El Niño toward La Niña and negative IOD. text |
